Every publication needs someone who can look at a complicated policy proposal, identify the part that will inevitably confuse everyone else, and explain why it matters. For Rust Belt Palladium, that’s Jama O.
As a co-founder and contributing author, Jama brings years of experience in political strategy, organizing, and public policy at the local, state, and federal levels. Her work has included campaigns, statewide organizing, and leading efforts within 501(c)(4) organizations to expand the progressive policy footprint across the heartland. She understands not only how policy gets written, but how the systems surrounding it are often designed by the people who already know how to navigate them.
That’s where Jama’s perspective is invaluable.
She approaches every issue with a healthy dose of pragmatism and a simple philosophy: good government should work for everyone, not just the people who understand government. The strongest policies are the ones that remove barriers instead of creating them, expand opportunities instead of limiting them, and make it easier for people to participate in their communities rather than forcing them to navigate an obstacle course of unnecessary bureaucracy.
At Rust Belt Palladium, Jama’s writing will focus on breaking down complex public policy into conversations people can actually use. Whether she’s examining legislation, discussing campaign strategy, or exploring how government decisions affect everyday life, her goal is the same: to make politics more understandable, more accessible, and ultimately more effective for the people it is supposed to serve.
Before many of those ideas ever make it to the page, though, they undergo an extensive peer review process conducted by Lucy and Ellie, Jama’s two dogs and her most trusted policy advisors. They have yet to identify a flaw in one of her arguments, although that may have something to do with the steady supply of treats involved in the review process.
They also happen to think she’s hilarious, making them the most supportive focus group any writer could ask for.
We’re excited to have Jama helping shape Rust Belt Palladium as both a founding voice and a strategic thinker. She reminds us that progress isn’t measured by how complicated a policy sounds. It’s measured by whether it makes life better for the people it’s meant to serve.
